Often overlooked or disregarded, PR is an important part of the marketing mix. Third party validation through a distributed article is priceless when it comes to demonstrable credibility with your purchasing audience. A simple television appearance or photo opportunity can deliver similar impact. PR needs to be figured into the mix at some level. I've managed PR initiatives myself and I've also managed PR agency relationships.
